Ports de Beseit Mountains (45 minutes from Sant Carles)

- highest peak, Mt. Caro 1440m (4,752ft). Road to the top.

- extensive mountain range, wild and relatively undiscovered, with some strange formations.

- great for walking and canyoning.

Tortosa (30 minutes from Sant Carles)

- historic city straddling the River Ebro.

- impressive view from parador (originally a Moorish fortress) looking down on cathedral and Ebro river.

Terra Alta (50 minutes from Sant Carles)

- beautiful wine-growing area, mountains and valleys of almonds.

- site of the greatest battle of the Spanish Civil War in 1938, the “ Battle of the Ebro ”, in which British soldiers participated in the International Brigades. Battlefield debris and trenches can still be seen.

- the Caves of Benifallet: small but fascinatingly beautiful caves with a great range of formations and colours.

- fantastic cycling path more than 40km long descending from Horta San Joan in the Beseit mountains along the old Zaragoza – Tortosa railway line through tunnels and beautiful valleys past the Fontcalda natural springs to Benifallet on the Ebro river and from there to Tortosa.
